About FCDO

The FCDO is the UK government department responsible for protecting and promoting British interests around the world. We work in the UK and in 168 countries and territories. We employ a diverse range of talented people capable of delivering to a high standard, often under pressure and sometimes in difficult places. We want the modern FCDO to reflect the very best of 21st century Britain.

We encourage applications from all suitably qualified applicants irrespective of background or circumstances (subject to nationality requirements). We welcome applications from all parts of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or background. We are committed to diversity and inclusion in all that we do. We encourage and support all staff to realise their potential and achieve a healthy work-life balance.

In return, we guarantee a fascinating, personally rewarding career at the centre of world events. FCDO offers unique opportunities, including responding to global crises, working on high profile issues and potential for international travel. We regularly score highly in surveys of ‘employers graduates would most like to work for’. The Civil Service has been in the top 10 of the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers over the last decade.

FCDO Core Priorities

  • We pursue our national interests and project the UK as a force for good in the world
  • We promote the interest of British Citizens
  • We safeguard the UK’s security and defend our values
  • We reduce poverty and tackle global challenges with our international partners

FCDO Finance Directorate

Finance Directorate is at the heart of the FCDO, enabling the FCDO to operate and deliver it's priorities. We implement policy and deliver public-facing services, internal operations, projects and programmes and statutory commitments, whilst protecting value for money, ensuring transparency, and managing risks. We offer a unique and diverse set of roles, development opportunities, and career pathways.

Our Directorate values and behaviours guide how we operate. We are confident, agile and responsive. We are a trusted partner, respected experts, and open to new learning. Wellbeing, inclusion, and diversity are important to us. We uphold zero tolerance of bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

Finance Directorate is committed to developing all staff to their full potential – both through on the job experience, formal learning and development, and bespoke training. If you are considering undertaking an accountancy qualification or are currently part qualified, financial support may be available to successful candidates.

You will be joining an active professional community across the FCDO, in the UK and internationally, and across the Government Finance network. The Government Finance Function is a diverse function of over 10,000 people, who ensure public money is spent efficiently and effectively, enabling the delivery of high-quality public services. The Government Finance Function's vision is 'finance at the heart of decision-making, delivering value for money and strengthening public trust', which recognises the continued need for finance teams to be a core part of decision making and the role that we play in ensuring public money is managed and spend effectively on behalf of the taxpayer.

Meet the team

Tim Jones
Finance Director

The FCDO is an exciting place to work. In the last three years, we have supported the Foreign Secretary and Ministers through EU Exit, the global pandemic, the creation of the FCDO, the Afghanistan response, temporary reduction in the UK’s aid budget from 0.7% to 0.5% of Gross National Income (GNI) and the ongoing international effort in respect of Ukraine all while helping deliver enduring FCDO priority outcomes. As Finance Directorate, we have been at the heart of once in a generation decisions making a difference to people’s lives and have kept our core operations and public facing services running throughout these challenges

We employ talented, committed, mission-driven people capable of delivering to a high standard, often under pressure and sometimes in difficult places. We encourage applications from all suitably qualified applicants and are committed to diversity and inclusion in all that we do. I want colleagues from a range of backgrounds to be able to bring their whole selves to work. We offer interesting, challenging and meaningful work. I’m proud to say I work for FCDO, and I know colleagues are too. I hope to welcome you soon.

Cat Little
Head of Government Finance Function

People remain our priority and the thing I’m most proud of as a function is the way that we have supported each other and reached across organisational boundaries to ensure that we look after each other as a function.
