In this Head of Campaigning and Policy role, you will set strategy, lead a team, and drive high-impact national campaigns to influence government, policymakers and key stakeholders across the UK. You will shape compelling public narratives, build powerful coalitions, and ensure the charity remains a leading voice in health policy and brain tumour research advocacy.

About Our Client

Brain Tumour Research (BTR) are the leading voice of the brain tumour community. They are the only national charity focused on finding a cure for all types of brain tumours. BTR is campaigning to increase the national investment in research into brain tumours to £35 million per year, while fundraising to create a network of seven sustainable Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence across the UK.

Job Description

Head of Campaigning and Policy

Hybrid

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver the charity's campaigning and policy strategy
  • Align the policy priorities with the organisation's goals
  • Advise senior leadership and trustees on political, policy and reputational issues
  • Identify opportunities to influence government, regulators, healthcare systems, pharma industry and research bodies
  • Represent the charity at parliamentary events, and conferences and other relevant meetings
  • Ensure campaigning activity complies with charity and and lobbying regulations
  • Manage reputational and political risk Campaigning leadership
  • Oversee the All Party-Parliamentary Group on Brain Tumours, for which we hold the secretariat, working with the Head of Stakeholder Relations to ensure effective working.
  • Work with our public affairs agency to develop and execute our public affairs and campaigning plans and activities
  • Keep abreast of, and challenge where appropriate, current thinking on health, research in particular cancer and brain tumours and third sector issues
  • Working with Research Comms, ensure complex medical and scientific information is translated into accessible, engaging content for the campaigning audience
  • Working with Comms team, implement and deliver the campaigning comms plan ensuring that we are engaging our community on campaigning activities, identifying relevant patient case studies that support our priorities, and helping to grow the campaigning database.
  • Manage campaigning and parliamentary engagement to strengthen the charity's national influence
  • Work closely with the research team to understand emerging research and translate research and evidence into compelling campaign and policy messages
  • Oversee the development of policy-driven campaigns that deliver tangible change
  • Lead high-impact actions such as petitions, open letters, awareness drives
  • Produce policy positions, consultation responses, briefings and reports
  • Ensure the charity has a visible and credible voice in policy debates
  • Design and deliver campaigns that engage and mobilise supporters, patients, and the public
  • Ensure patient and public voices are central to all campaign activity
  • Build relationships with Parliamentarians and policy makers across all four nations
  • Collaborate with communications, fundraising, research, and stakeholder teams to deliver joined-up campaigns * Ensure alignment across media, digital, public affairs, and supporter engagement channels
  • Build relationships with government departments, MPs and Peers, NHS and healthcare leaders, research institutions, industry partners and patient organisations Evaluation & Impact

The Successful Applicant

Head of Campaigning and Policy

Essential:

  • Significant experience in campaigning, public affairs, or advocacy (ideally within the charity, health, or research sectors)
  • Proven track record of delivering successful, high impact campaigns
  • Experience influencing policy and decision-makers
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills
  • Excellent communication and storytelling abilities Essential Interview
  • Deep understanding of public campaigning techniques, including digital mobilisation
  • Ability to translate complex scientific or policy issues into compelling public narratives
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills
  • Experience leading and developing high performing teams
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and bring creativity to campaigning approaches
  • Collaborative leadership style with strong emotional intelligence

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a medical research or healthcare environment
  • Knowledge of the UK policy and healthcare landscape
  • Proven record of demonstrable engagement with patient advocacy or lived-experience communities
