Job Description

  • Provide strategic oversight of all financial activities, ensuring robust financial governance, regularity, propriety and value for money across the organisation.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of the Medium-Term Financial Plan, annual budget, and financial strategies-including reserves, capital, and treasury management.
  • Ensure accurate, compliant preparation of statutory accounts and financial returns, and act as key liaison for both internal and external audit processes.
  • Oversee effective budget management systems, ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting and strong financial controls across the organisation.
  • Lead and enhance financial systems and processes, driving efficiency and supporting digital transformation and wider organisational change initiatives.
  • Provide quality financial advice to senior leaders and governing bodies, ensuring risks, implications and statutory responsibilities are clearly communicated.
  • Lead, motivate and develop the finance function, fostering professional performance, capability and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute as a senior leader to corporate strategy and organisational objectives, taking on wider strategic responsibilities as required.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Head of Finance should have:

  • A recognised accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in financial management within the public, not for profit or education sectors.
  • Strong track record in strategic financial planning, budgeting, treasury management, and leading the production of statutory accounts.
  • Proven experience working with internal and external audit, advising senior leaders, and contributing to major change or transformation programmes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and motivate high‑performing teams, with excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement
  • Strong understanding of public sector finance, financial governance frameworks, and complex financial systems and procurement environments.
