Job Description

The Internal Communications and Engagement Lead reports into the Internal Communications Manager. Within the organisation's structure, the Lead role provides senior professional expertise, day‑to‑day leadership on campaigns and activity, and support to the wider internal communications team, while accountability for the overall function sits with the Manager.

Working closely with the Internal Communications Manager and the wider team, the postholder will help deliver a coherent, multi‑channel internal communications approach that connects colleagues to organisational priorities, strategy and change.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Translating organisational objectives and complex information into clear, engaging and audience‑focused internal communications and campaigns.
  • Ensuring the consistent delivery of high‑quality internal communications content that is clear, concise, human, written in plain English, and aligned in tone and style.
  • Designing, planning and delivering joined‑up internal communications campaigns that move beyond single outputs to sustained engagement.
  • Leading the development and delivery of engaging internal events and engagement activity that support leadership visibility, understanding and two‑way communication.
  • Enabling senior leaders to communicate confidently and effectively with colleagues through expert advice, coaching and high‑quality messaging.
  • Building a culture of listening and responding by embedding insight, feedback and employee voice into internal communications activity.
  • Supporting the Internal Communications Manager in developing a team of Internal Communications Officers, including setting priorities, building capability and encouraging proactive, audience‑led communications thinking.
  • Working closely with teams and senior stakeholders across the organisation to provide trusted internal communications and engagement expertise.
  • Using insight, evaluation and feedback to continuously improve the effectiveness, reach and impact of internal communications activity.

The Successful Applicant

The successful candidate will bring the following skills and attributes:

  • Significant experience leading or delivering internal communications in a complex organisation.
  • Experience planning and delivering multi‑channel internal communications campaigns, events or engagement initiatives.
  • Experience working effectively with senior leaders and stakeholders.
  • Experience of innovation and the development of projects, plans and people.
  • Experience supporting organisational change or transformation through communications.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise and audience‑focused content.
  • Strong ability to translate complex information into engaging and accessible communications.
  • Demonstrable skill in planning, delivering and evaluating campaign‑led internal communications.
  • Ability to advise, influence and challenge stakeholders constructively to improve communication outcomes.
  • Experience creating or commissioning digital and video content for internal audiences.
  • Working knowledge of internal digital communication platforms and tools such as Viva Engage, SharePoint & video content.
