The role of a cloud engineer

A cloud engineer is responsible for managing, overseeing and performing duties surrounding cloud computing. They usually fall under the information technology team and are an integral part of growing IT infrastructure. With the rapid growth of cloud computing and cloud-based systems, the need for cloud engineers is higher than ever. Cloud engineer jobs can be broken down even further into specialisations within the cloud industry. Some examples of cloud engineer roles are cloud security engineer, cloud solutions architect, cloud systems consultant, sysops engineer, and more. Cloud engineer jobs salary can vary between different industries and companies, but as a specialised position is often high compared to similar roles.

Typical tasks of a cloud engineer

A cloud engineer’s tasks can vary with the volume of businesses looking to convert or move business applications and processes to a cloud system, whether private, public or hybrid.  Typical tasks for a cloud engineer can range from designing, managing and connecting cloud services to coordinating multi-team cloud integrations to moving archaic systems towards cloud computing services.

A cloud engineer job involves reviewing and assessing a current companies infrastructure and finding new solutions for operations and business functions. Cloud-based systems have slowly been integrated across a range of business areas, so, for some cloud engineers, the role is about deciding which types of cloud systems to implement, and which are the most viable.

Qualifications required for a cloud engineer job

Depending on which area a cloud engineer wants to move into there are different qualifications and requirements. Some examples of specialisations, or similar jobs, are everything from a software engineer to software architect, to DeVops engineer, to a data engineer and so on.

In terms of the overarching role of cloud engineer a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject is the base requirement, this can be in information technology, mathematics, computer science, or similar specialisation. The education needs to be paired with expertise within similar roles, cloud technology or prowess for system modernisation.

Various cloud solution providers offer their own certifications that are relevant for a cloud engineer job, for example, Microsoft, AWS, Google and Cisco all have relevant courses for various roles and levels. In addition, finding associate cloud engineer jobs may be an easier route into the industry.

Hard/soft skills needed for a cloud engineer job

As there are a lot of career routes that a cloud engineer can come from and take, the skills set required can be quite diverse, and has a lot of factors that affect what employers are looking for. A cloud engineer should display some of the following skills to be deemed a good candidate for the role: team-oriented, motivated, autonomous, problem-solver, have the ability to multitask, prioritise and research new technology or viable updates.

In terms of hard skills, a cloud engineer should have experience in business intelligence, big data, advanced analytics, machine learning, cloud computing, deployment models and data integration. Each company will have different preferences and requirements for their cloud engineer jobs, but these are examples of common skills across most roles.
