The role of a cyber security analyst

A cyber security analyst plans and delivers security protocols to protect an organisation from malicious cyber-attacks or data breaches. It is their role to ensure that all computer systems and networks operate in a secure manner. They are responsible for updating and maintaining current systems, installing new software and hardware, and identifying weaknesses in existing systems. In the event of a cyber-attack, the analyst must detect and resolve the threat. In terms of position, the cyber security analyst usually sits within a larger IT team, reporting to a cyber security manager, or, in some cases, the head of cyber security. It is also possible for a cyber security analyst to work on a contract basis. This role is not limited to a specific sector or industry. Common sectors for analysts include government, finance, tech, education, and insurance. Given the growing threat of cyber-crime, cyber security analysts are often in high demand.

Typical tasks of a cyber security analyst

Broadly speaking, cyber security analyst jobs involve the same set of tasks, regardless of industry or business size. Cyber security analysts are constantly on the lookout for emerging cyber threats, which involves a great deal of research and evaluation. At the same time, they must also stay abreast of industry news and emerging technologies. As the bulk of the role centres on the prevention of cyber-attacks and breaches, cyber security analysts must constantly monitor for attacks, testing and assessing existing security measures and products. This includes running simulated security breaches, also known as ‘ethical hacking’, and cyber-attacks. Reporting is a major part of this role; any suspicious behaviour, and unauthorised activity must be collated and reported to senior leadership. In some instances, experienced cyber security analysts may be required to build new security systems based on specific business needs. Additionally, it is a cyber analyst’s responsibility to manage a system’s users, ensuring only authorised personnel are able to access sensitive data and information.

Qualifications required for cyber security analyst jobs

Typically, most cyber security analysts require a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a similar subject. In most cases, the work experience equivalent will also be accepted. In general, cyber security analyst jobs range from junior level right up to senior, with different levels of experience required for each. A junior level analyst may need up to 2 years’ experience, depending on the organisation. A cyber security certification, such as CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) or CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor) may also be required.

Hard/soft skills needed for cyber security analyst jobs

Cyber security analysts require a number of technical hard skills for this role. They must have an in-depth knowledge of intrusion detection, data security, network security, and endpoint management. While not a deal breaker, programming skills are a massive bonus and will only boost a candidate’s chances. In terms of soft skills, cyber security analysts must have a strong attention to detail, with the ability to think critically, stay calm under pressure, and self-organise. Cyber security analysts must be excellent communicators, both written and oral, work well as a part of a team, and must be able to think analytically. Finally, most analysts are natural problem solvers with a passion for technology.
