Your guide to Developer Jobs: Everything you need to know

Are you a developer looking for your next challenge? Michael Page can help. We work with top employers across the UK to connect talented candidates with the perfect developer jobs.

Whether you’re just starting your career or are a seasoned professional, we can help you find the right developer jobs to match your skills and interests.

The role of a developer

Skilled professionals in developer roles are generally responsible for developing, coding, installing and maintaining software or websites. Essentially, they must help to create and test the software or website from start to finish.

The technical specifications of developer jobs can differ slightly depending on your area of focus.

People in software developer jobs are responsible for the creation and maintenance of software that meets users’ needs. They must analyse users’ needs and see how they create or update software that meets these demands and eliminates pain points.

Meanwhile, those in web developer jobs must create and maintain websites, while taking responsibility for the day-to-day smooth running of the site, such as performance and capacity. In front end developer jobs, meanwhile, you’ll focus on the part of the website or software the user sees and interacts with.

All IT developer jobs demand highly skilled technology professionals able to create and maintain the websites, software, and systems the business needs to thrive.

In a developer job, people skills are a necessity as you will be required to effectively communicate with other departments and, in some cases, customers. This is essential for analysing customers’ and colleagues’ needs ahead of building or updating a product, and subsequently for troubleshooting.

You may also be asked to provide training for non-IT professionals when a new product is rolled out or updated, meaning it is important to be able to talk about the product in a simple and straightforward manner.

Furthermore, as development professionals rise up the career ladder, they may be called on to manage and train junior developers.

FAQs

What qualifications do I need to become a developer?

There are a number of pathways to a developer role: a university degree, a college course, an apprenticeship or a graduate training scheme. Many developers hold degrees in subjects including computer science, IT, software development, maths, and financial technology. Appropriate college courses include an A-level in computing, a Level 3 Certificate in Programming, a T Level in Digital Production, Design and Development, or a Higher National Certificate in Computing. After completing college courses, it is advisable to either go on to complete a more advanced qualification such as a higher apprenticeship, or to opt for a trainee position within a company.

What skills does a developer need to have?

Exceptional computer literacy is essential for a developer, while knowledge of a wide-range of programming languages is certainly advantageous. Mathematical aptitude is also necessary for this role, as are problem solving skills, excellent time management, and accuracy and attention to detail. Developers will also need to lean heavily on their teamwork and communication skills.

What does a developer do?

Developers are responsible for creating software that will meet users needs, and installing and maintaining such products for as long as the business needs them. This includes tasks such as analysing customer needs, coding, rolling out updates, and troubleshooting.

Can you get a developer job with no experience?

It is possible to get a developer job with no experience, although it helps to have qualifications relevant to the role. Some companies are willing to train or offer apprenticeships to developers who are just starting out in the industry, but any type of work experience will likely prove an advantage for job seekers in this industry.

How can I get a job as a developer?

If you’re a developer looking for your next opportunity, Michael Page can help. Our team of experts can connect you with the best employers in the UK, and help you find the perfect development job to match your ambitions. Submit your CV today to take the next step in your development career.
