The role of a financial accountant

Financial accountant jobs are important administrative roles with the potential to have a significant impact on the future of an organisation. Senior financial accountants can play guiding roles in steering business decision-making, to help establish diligent and efficient financial processes based on reports that analyse the current financial performance of the company.

Junior financial accountant jobs are likely to carry less responsibility, but can still be instrumental in achieving progress by reporting to the financial accounting manager, who will in turn take their reports into account when making recommendations to the company's principals, directors or executives.

Typical tasks of a financial accountant

A typical financial accountant role will be tasked with multiple duties from a long list of common finance tasks. These can range from cash flow management and preparing month-end and year-end reports, to budgeting, forecasting and liaising with external auditors.

Those on senior financial accountant jobs may be tasked with analysing accounting systems already in place in an organisation. You could be asked to proactively identify areas for future improvement, and suggest how such improvement could be achieved. You may be asked to present your findings to the chief financial officer, other C-suite executives and company directors, or to prepare written reports for them.

Financial accounting managers can be responsible for regulatory compliance, ensuring that your organisation meets all of its regulatory reporting requirements and any other legislative demands. In this sense, you play a critical role in delivering full compliance at all times, helping to reduce your organisation's risk exposure and to avoid potential enforcement action, fines and sanctions.

Qualifications required for a financial accountant job

Financial accountant jobs may have varying requirements, but having a university degree in a related discipline is a clear advantage. This should ideally be a 2:1 or higher at bachelor's or master's level, in a subject area such as accounting, finance or business management. This is especially the case for junior financial accountant jobs, where a high pass in a relevant degree programme can be a valuable substitute for any previous career experience.

An alternative to a university degree is a relevant professional qualification from one of the UK's main accountancy organisations. These include groups like the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), each of which operate their own accreditation schemes. For senior financial accountant roles you may require certified or chartered status, or to be able to show evidence that you are working towards reaching a significant high-level continuing professional development (CPD) milestone.

Hard/soft skills needed for a financial accountant job

Strong numeracy skills are essential in financial accounting jobs. You may need to be able to audit reports and ensure that the figures are correct, plus analyse and work with complex data to draw conclusions to report to senior executives. You should have an appreciation for the value of the money involved, but should not be daunted by processing reports that include substantial sums.

Effective teamwork is a significant soft skill required for this role. While your analysis may involve periods of working independently, you will need to collaborate with other departments when collecting data, plus present your findings to senior management. In senior financial accountant jobs you will need to lead your team, providing mentoring and support as required by juniors.
