The role of a head of IT

The head of IT helps support all areas of a business by ensuring the information technology systems, infrastructure and devices are working properly. The head of IT aims to deploy new technology and systems whilst overseeing the current technology being used.

A head of IT can be referred to as an IT director, director of technology or head of IT service, amongst other titles. In most hierarchies the head of IT will report to the chief information officer or other members of the C-suite.

The role of head of IT is to be part the management team, but also the gateway to the rest of the information technology department. The head of IT aims to ensure that the business makes the most of the technology and pushes towards broader goals.

Typical tasks of a head of IT

Many factors defines the tasks of the head of IT, but regardless of the company there are common responsibilities for all those in head of IT roles.

The head of IT is tasked with researching, deploying and maintaining new technological options that support business operations. Head of IT jobs involve a lot of people management, including ensuring that those in the IT department have the skills, expertise and staffing support to complete tasks and maintain IT systems.

One task the head of IT oversees is gap analysis: ensuring that resources the business has will allow it to achieve its goals. The head of IT needs to determine whether or not the organisation can meet its goals sufficiently, or needs additional technology, expertise or resources.

Qualifications required for a head of IT job

Candidates should have a relevant bachelor’s degree in information technology, project management, computer science or information systems. Some head of IT roles may require a master’s degree in a related area.

The salary of someone in a head of IT role has the potential to be high, but will be affected by variables such as business type, company size, level of reliance on IT and growth projections.

The skills that make a successful head of IT differ from role to role, but there are common soft skills that companies will look for in their information technology management roles.
