The role of a head of IT

The head of IT helps support all areas of a business by ensuring the information technology systems, infrastructure and devices are working properly. The head of IT aims to deploy new technology and systems whilst overseeing the current technology being used.

A head of IT can be referred to as an IT director, director of technology or head of IT service, amongst other titles. In most hierarchies the head of IT will report to the chief information officer or other members of the C-suite.

The role of head of IT is to be part the management team, but also the gateway to the rest of the information technology department. The head of IT aims to ensure that the business makes the most of the technology and pushes towards broader goals.

Candidates should have a relevant bachelor’s degree in information technology, project management, computer science or information systems. Some head of IT roles may require a master’s degree in a related area.

The salary of someone in a head of IT role has the potential to be high, but will be affected by variables such as business type, company size, level of reliance on IT and growth projections.
