The role of a software engineer

A software engineer helps design, develop and update software and systems for an organisation. They are an integral part of an information technology team, and essential for creating new software, apps and systems. Software engineers could help design a game, launch new software, or work on operating and network control systems.

The role of a software engineer is always changing, due to the evolution of technology and new business goals. A software engineer is expected to understand past, present and future changes in the business. They need to know what the company has had, what it has deployed for current processes, plus be able to recommend future directions.

Sometimes the role is defined as a systems engineer, web programmer, database engineer, or even a software developer, depending on the job poster. Roles in IT are often fluid, and there is no standardisation between companies and sectors.

Typical tasks of a software engineer

Software engineers can have a lot of different responsibilities, depending on their company, the projects they are working on, and the size of their information technology department.

A software engineer needs to be able to work alongside users, understanding their needs to help determine how software is going to be designed and implemented. A software engineer should have a good understanding of user experience.

A task important to a software engineer job is noting down the steps in a system, application or software, allowing for easier updates, fixes and upgrades in the future. The role is about being proactive rather than reactive, anticipating changes in the market, software and technological updates.

Qualifications required for a software engineer job

A software engineer candidate is expected to have at least a degree in a field such as the information technology sphere, or a STEM degree, with a preference towards computer engineering. Some software engineer jobs may require the candidate to possess a master’s degree, depending on their remit and industry.

A candidate for a software engineer job will be expected to understand different computer languages and be adept at coding. Therefore, any qualifications or additional training in these areas would be beneficial. Software engineers often receive on-the-job training and further qualifications as they progress in a company or role, to help them further their knowledge.

Hard/soft skills needed for a software engineer job

Soft skills essential for a software engineer job include problem-solving, strategic thinking, analytical mindset, creativity, teamwork, communication, and the ability to multitask. A software engineer will be expected to wear a lot of different hats, depending on the company they are working for, so a varied mix of skills is useful.

The kind of hard skills a software engineer needs to succeed can be varied. Examples would be software testing, coding, programming, knowledge of computer languages, computer science fundamentals, information analysis, and understanding of data structures and methodologies.
