1 October 2025, London: Michael Page has released its 2026 Salary Guides, offering insight into key trends in the UK technology hiring market, highlighting the most in-demand roles and skills, and examining the priorities technology professionals are seeking in their next positions. The report draws on data from thousands of placements and conversations with hiring managers and professionals across 18 guides in 15 sectors, providing valuable recruitment insights.

The data shows nearly half (48%) of UK technology professionals are actively looking for new opportunities. However, nearly the same proportion (30%) of UK hiring managers report difficulty finding the talent they need. This mismatch is driven by candidates holding out for the perfect opportunity, while businesses, faced with tighter budgets and the risk of costly mis-hires, are also waiting for the ideal candidate – creating a “wait-and-see workforce”. To help companies navigate these challenges and capture high-demand technology talent, Michael Page has released its latest Salary Guides.

AI and data roles in high demand

AI and data roles lead demand in the technology sector, driven by the continued growth of AI in recent years. In addition to traditional technical roles like AI Data Architect and Machine Learning Engineer, there’s growing demand for Change Managers and Cyber Security Consultants, reflecting businesses’ recognition that successful AI and technology projects need secure, scalable solutions and smooth organisational change.

Although AI and data roles are in the highest demand, businesses are also increasingly seeking hybrid technology talent. Skills in communication and creativity are at the top of the list, as companies look for individuals who can blend technical expertise with the ability to adapt and collaborate effectively across teams.

The hotspots for technology talent are London, the Southern Home Counties*, and the Midlands, with demand for specialised AI and data expertise continuing to rise across these regions.

Given the high demand for this talent, Michael Page highlights the importance of strong salary benchmarking and holistic benefits packages to successfully attract and retain top candidates.

●    Creativity

James Barrett, Managing Director of Technology and Transformation at Michael Page, commented: “We’re seeing strong demand for specialists in AI, cyber security, and technology-led transformation – however, while AI roles are in demand, it’s the skills behind them that really count. The strongest interest isn’t for ‘AI gurus’, but for hybrid talent that blend technical expertise with creative problem-solving. Experience with regulation, complex data, and stakeholder engagement often outweighs pure technical depth. This talent is highly sought after, making strong salary benchmarking and competitive packages essential to attracting the right experts for your team.”

Salary is just one part of the puzzle for in-demand technology talent

Despite 48% of UK technology professionals actively looking for a new role, recruitment challenges today are not just about supply and demand – they also reflect evolving candidate expectations.

Across the technology industry, 88% of UK technology professionals say work-life balance is their top priority. In fact, 60% would turn down a promotion if it compromised their wellbeing. However, over a third (35%) of UK technology professionals have little trust in their leadership to prioritise employee wellbeing alongside business goals.

Barrett concludes, “The best technology talent won’t be captured by salary alone. Their priorities have shifted – now driven by purpose, wellbeing, and flexibility. Companies that look beyond salary and offer holistic packages will be the ones to secure the talent they need and break the ‘wait-and-see workforce’, where technology professionals are holding out for the best possible options.”
