Legal: Private Practice

What does the landscape look like for Legal: Private Practice recruitment in 2027?

The London private practice market remains active but is becoming more selective. Firms are continuing to hire in key areas, rather than recruiting solely for growth.

Disputes, competition, regulatory, investigations, restructuring and specialist sector practices remain priority investment areas, while corporate hiring is more closely tied to market conditions.

US firms continue to drive salary increases and lateral movement, particularly at mid-level and senior associate level.

Candidates remain confident, but firms are placing more emphasis on technical ability, cultural fit and long-term commitment than they were 12 to 18 months ago.

Flexibility, career progression and quality of work are now almost as important as compensation when it comes to attracting top talent.

Where are candidates willing to compromise on pay — and where won't they budge? What creative solutions are businesses adopting to better meet candidate expectations?

Many candidates are willing to accept lower headline compensation if a move offers better long-term prospects, stronger career opportunities, higher-quality work, lower billing targets or greater flexibility. We regularly see candidates move from US firms to UK firms, or from more demanding environments to firms that offer a better work-life balance, for these reasons.

That said, most candidates are not willing to compromise on fundamentals such as career progression, culture, work-life balance and hybrid working. Associates are also placing more importance on transparency around promotion opportunities and expectations.

Salary remains important, but concerns about culture, working hours or career progression are often bigger factors when candidates decide whether to accept a role.
