Job Description

As the Automation Engineer you will be tasked with the following;

  • Design and implement automated processes to improve production efficiency.
  • Analyse existing processes to identify suitable automation technologies.
  • Develop equipment and workflows that maximise automation and performance.
  • Work with suppliers to refine equipment design with a focus on safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Diagnose and resolve faults in automated systems and machinery.
  • Manage and justify investments in new equipment, demonstrating clear ROI.
  • Support quotation activity and planning for new business opportunities.
  • Oversee budgets for projects, spare parts, and related expenses.
  • Collaborate with Production Engineering and Maintenance to ensure smooth introduction of automated processes.
  • Continuously improve production systems, machinery, and processes.
  • Stay updated on engineering technology, product requirements, and modern manufacturing methods.
  • Lead and support process improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend and implement efficiency improvements across production lines.
  • Introduce JIT methodologies and support future technology integration.
  • Deliver projects in line with APQP requirements.
  • Create and update engineering documents such as FMEAs and control plans.
  • Direct Production Engineers in delivering line improvements.
  • Plan optimal process flows and operator methods to maximise output and maintain quality.
  • Set project targets and track outcomes effectively.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Automation Engineer should have:

* PLC Programming and Fault Finding (Allen Bradley, Siemens, Keyence etc.) to EAL / City & Guilds level or equivalent

* Proven experience in the use and implementation of PLC systems and automated production processes.

* Knowledge of robotics, pneumatic and mechanical systems used in production environments.

* Proven ability to use a logical approach to problem solving and root cause corrective action (RCCA)

* Familiarity with formal problem-solving techniques such as SGA, DMAIC, 7-step, PDCA, 5 Why and Fishbone Diagram.

* Experience in creating and managing production engineering documentation in line with IATCF requirements (e.g. control plans, process flow diagrams, FMEA)

* Knowledge of equipment OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), planned maintenance and spares control

* Proven ability to implement project schedules and plan effectively and on time

* Experience with capital investment for new or improved equipment

* Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

* University degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automation Engineering or a related field (or equivalent)

* Significant experience in electronics and / or automotive manufacturing is preferred.

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
