The Philanthropy Manager plays a key role in delivering the university's philanthropic ambitions through the development of high-value relationships with major donors and charitable trusts and foundations.Reporting to the Head of Philanthropy, the postholder will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of major gift prospects and supporters.

Job Description


Major Donor Fundraising

  • Identify, qualify and cultivate new major gift prospects, building a robust pipeline of supporters capable of making gifts of £10,000 and above.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donor prospects and supporters, developing tailored cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans.
  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with donors, ensuring their philanthropic interests are aligned with University priorities.
  • Work with senior colleagues and academic leaders to prepare and deliver significant fundraising asks and proposals.
  • Ensure all stewardship activity demonstrates the impact of donor support and encourages continued engagement with the University.



Trusts and Foundations

  • Research and identify funding opportunities from charitable trusts and foundations that align with University priorities.
  • Develop compelling funding applications, proposals and cases for support.
  • Manage the full grant lifecycle, including prospect identification, application development, due diligence, reporting and stewardship.
  • Build strong relationships with trust representatives and trustees to maximise long-term funding opportunities.



Relationship Development

  • Develop strong working relationships across the University to identify projects and initiatives with philanthropic potential.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to colleagues on major donor and trust fundraising opportunities.
  • Represent the University professionally at meetings, events and networking opportunities as appropriate.



Planning and Performance

  • Supported by the Head of Philanthropy, line manage and support the development of the Senior Regular Giving Officer through regular supervision, objective setting and performance reviews.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date prospect pipeline, ensuring fundraising activity is effectively planned and tracked.
  • Record all donor interactions in line with University policies and fundraising best practice.
  • Monitor progress against agreed fundraising objectives and provide regular updates on pipeline performance and income generation.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the University's philanthropy strategy and fundraising priorities.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Philanthropy Manager should have:

  • Proven experience in securing major gifts or fundraising in the not-for-profit or education sector.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
  • Ability to create persuasive proposals and presentations.
  • Knowledge of donor stewardship practices and fundraising strategies.
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills.
  • Passion for the goals and values of the not-for-profit/education/higher education sector.
