The role of a change manager

Change managers oversee the planning and delivery of change management projects within an organisation. It is the change manager’s responsibility to ensure that any major business changes occur easily, with minimal disruption to productivity. These roles focus on the people element, ensuring smooth transition and adoption between old systems and new. Change managers often work on projects that involve systems, technology, organisation structure and business processes.

During project delivery, the change manager is responsible for tracking progress, reporting regularly to senior management. Due to the collaborative nature of these roles, change managers work across multiple departments, interacting with stakeholders at all levels. This is a strategic, high-pressure role, which is not limited to a particular sector.

Typical tasks of a change manager

While the specifics will vary from business to business, people within change management jobs generally complete similar tasks. Either individually or as part of a team, a change manager is expected to create a detailed strategy and delivery timeline for the change project at hand. They must assess potential impacts from the change, the readiness of the organisation to transition, and conduct a stakeholder analysis.

They are also responsible for overseeing communication, training and general preparation ahead of the proposed changes. This involves monitoring engagement with plans, their adoption, plus any resistance to them. Change managers are required to manage and maintain multiple stakeholder relationships. In terms of project delivery, a change manager must identify and set the metrics against which success will be measured. Change managers can expect to create reports and present their findings on a regular basis. Similar to a project manager, the change manager is responsible for budgeting, resourcing and conducting risk assessment. As most significant change projects take months to complete, the change manager must regularly assess their strategy and methodology for potential improvements.

Qualifications required for change manager jobs

In-depth knowledge of change management techniques and principles are the most important thing a candidate needs for a change management role. Additionally, most professionals in this line of work are likely to have a degree in a related field such as project management, business, or information technology. For senior roles, a change management or project management accreditation may be required, such as PRINCE2 or APMG’s CMI-run course. Most job roles for change management in business will also require at least five years of experience in a similar position. Many organisations will favour candidates with experience in a similar sector to theirs.

Hard/soft skills needed for change manager jobs

These roles require significant knowledge of change management principles and methodologies, and the tools used to deliver change projects. Project management, budgeting, resourcing, planning and strategy skills are non-negotiable for this role. In terms of soft skills required, change managers must have exemplary communications skills, the ability to identify and solve problems quickly, strong time management and organisation skills, and good collaboration and relationship building skills. Finally, sound business acumen is highly beneficial for these roles.
