A guide to CFO jobs

Chief financial officers (CFOs) are at the top of the finance chain and are responsible for the current and future financial condition on an organisation. Reporting into the CEO, they play a key part in assisting with the strategic direction of the business and their teams will be heavily involved in supporting the tactical initiatives of that strategy.
The goal of the CFO is to have total financial control of the organisation in order to achieve sustainable revenue and growth. They are also responsible for deciding how to invest their company’s money, which involves considering financial risk, debt and equity, and fundraising. The CFO must be able to report to the CEO and other stakeholders on all aspects of a company’s financial situation as they are ultimately accountable for all finance related activities in that business.
Michael Page Finance has been helping shape successful careers and supporting companies build better businesses for over 40 years. We specialise in the permanent, temporary and interim recruitment of professionals into accountancy, banking and finance jobs. Our workforce of over 220 specialist recruitment consultants operates from 28 office locations in the UK giving us complete coverage.

  • Divisional finance director
  • Deputy finance director
  • Group financial controller

Key CFO tasks

Chief financial officers are part of the senior management team of an organisation and as such, have large teams of finance personnel to carry out day-to-day activities such as checking the accounts. Their role is strategic and supervisory, usually reporting directly to the CEO.
A typical day for a CFO would involve; monitoring and assessing strategic business plans, developing financial and tax strategies, performing risk management activities, controlling and planning fundraising, evaluating the company’s cashflow, overseeing transactions systems, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations, preparing forecasting reports and supervising any negotiations and acquisitions.

Key CFO skills

CFOs and other finance directors must have extremely strong interpersonal and management skills, as well as excellent communication skills owing to the seniority of the role. As a senior leader, it’s vital that they act as a great leader - finance teams can be very large and a strong, motivated team is vital to the success of a CFO.
CFOs must also be able to adapt to new technology and understand big data as finance functions develop and progress. They are required to make business crucial decisions and recommendations so must be good problem solvers and have analytical minds.

Qualifications and experience

Most CFOs are required to be degree educated as well as ACCA qualified, or similar. Some employers will also require an MBA.
CFOs usually progress to their role from a finance director position or a CFO role in another company, but the years of experience required will vary by employer. They need to have managed large teams before as well as be used to a high level of responsibility for financial decisions, but can come from a range of finance functions such as treasury or accounting. CFOs should have knowledge and experience of corporate financial laws and regulations and be familiar with using data to evaluate risk and put forward recommendations for business strategy.
