HR business partners are responsible for developing an HR agenda which not only supports the people within a company and its employees and managers, but also the overall business objectives set by the board.
In this position you are ultimately a consultant to the senior managers and people’s champion for the wider collective of staff. Business partnering roles offer a demanding yet rewarding career in HR.

Key HR business partner tasks

Working as an HR business partner, the tasks you are likely to be required to undertake may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Developing strong working relationships with HR colleagues
  • Supporting the implementation of change and business initiatives
  • Coaching and supporting managers and senior leaders to reach the best commercial outcomes
  • Supporting national pay negotiations 
  • Proposing new reward practices and managing change
  • Supporting the development of HR material for internal and external communication channels
  • Collating and interpreting management information and providing external insight to stakeholders
  • Identifying, assessing, managing and reporting risks, and controls
  • Defining excellence within the new HR structure as an integral part of the team

Key HR business partner responsibilities

The overall responsibility of an HR business partner is to lead projects on behalf of the HR team across a wide range of business and HR projects.
Responsibilities of HR business partners can be vast. Typically, it is an HR business partner’s responsibility to:
  • Develop recruitment channels and processes to assist the business in the effective recruitment of talent at the right cost.
  • Implement HR policies and practices in line with corporate KPIs and business strategy, and targets.
  • Deliver a framework around reward practices with a particular focus on role sizing, salary rates and gender pay gap. 
  • Collaborate with senior HR business partners and leaders from different areas of expertise within the business to deliver people initiatives aligned to the strategic people plan.
  • Offer a true HR partnering service to stakeholders.


Qualifications and experience

Business partner roles are very senior positions, so professionals at this stage of their career will have extensive experience working within an HR department. In addition to this experience, a business partner would, as a minimum, have a full CIPD membership and a degree in human resources management or a similar qualification that has HRM as a major component. In order to step up into an HR business partner position you will need strong skills in building employee relations, change management and performance management which you are likely to acquire in an HR manager position or other HR role with additional training and guidance.
