The role of a transformation manager

The transformation manager role can sometimes be mistaken for project management. While there can be overlap between the positions, there are key differences. If a business transformation programme is simply a series of projects, it can be overseen by a project manager. For major transformation initiatives that span the entire organisation, the specialist skills of a transformation manager will be better suited to achieving the programme’s goals. The transformation manager will often head up a transformation team and may report directly to C-level executives, or the head of transformation.

Typical tasks of a transformation manager

Transformation programmes can vary widely from one organisation to another. Some may involve little more than a single large project focusing on a specific business function, whereas others will touch on the whole organisation, from its culture and structure to its processes and methods of operation. Despite this, the fundamental tasks and responsibilities of business transformation jobs will remain largely the same. Ultimately, transformation managers are charged with delivering quality improvements across processes, projects and business functions. Sometimes they will lead the whole project, while in other cases they will play a supporting role. Either way, they will act as a key point of contact for the project, communicating with stakeholders and coaching teams on how to adapt to new systems of working. They will spend time on diagnosing issues and proposing solutions. When acting as the project lead, the transformation manager will keep their team motivated and ensure momentum is upheld throughout, to deliver on the initial objectives of the programme.

Qualifications required for a transformation manager

While there are no specific qualifications required to secure a job as a transformation manager, candidates will often possess at least a bachelor’s-level degree in a relevant field such as business, economics, engineering or a technical subject. Internationally recognised certifications like PMP will help candidates stand out. More importantly, they must have proven experience of being involved in, or ideally leading, change management projects in similar types of organisations. Furthermore, they may have multiple years of project management experience.

Hard/soft skills needed for a transformation manager

Business transformation manager skills can be broadly split into “hard” and “soft” skills. Harder, more technical skills include expert-level proficiency in presentation, reporting, and analytical tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Minitab. Depending on the organisation in question, they may need experience of working in line with specific project and transformation management methodologies, such as Lean or Six Sigma. At the softer end of the scale, transformation managers must be able to lead projects during challenging scenarios that require them to combine a wide range of perspectives and abilities, from finance and strategy to operations and human resources. They must be able to deal with complex and ambiguous situations on the fly, and find practical solutions, feel comfortable coaching stakeholders at all levels of an organization. They must also be able to communicate effectively with senior executives.
