We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to take full ownership of payroll operations in a standalone capacity for a Business Services organisation. This temporary rolling contract requires someone who is immediately available or on a 1 week notice period confident managing end-to-end payroll independently, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and high-quality service delivery. You will oversee the complete payroll cycle and act as the primary point of contact for all payroll matters.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver end-to-end payroll independently, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
  • Maintain all payroll inputs including starters, leavers, variable pay, overtime, benefits, and statutory payments.
  • Manage the relationship with external payroll providers, reviewing outputs and resolving discrepancies.
  • Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, NI, SSP, SMP, SPP, and other statutory requirements.
  • Complete reconciliations, payroll reporting, and journals for Finance.
  • Act as the sole point of contact for employee and manager payroll queries.
  • Oversee and manage year-end processes such as P60s, P11Ds, and statutory submissions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, controls, and audit trails.
  • Identify and implement process improvements across payroll operations.
  • Provide payroll support to HR, Finance, and other internal stakeholders where required.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Payroll Specialist should have:

  • Proven experience operating in a standalone payroll role.
  • Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and compliance requirements.
  • Confident in managing external payroll providers.
  • Experience using major payroll systems such as ADP, iTrent, SAP, Sage, or Oracle.
  • High accuracy, excellent attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
  • Strong Excel skills including VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, and reconciliations.
  • Clear and confident communication skills.
  • Experience within Business Services or professional services is desirable but not essential.
  • Must be immediately available or on a maximum notice period of one week.
