A guide to IT support jobs

The role of an IT Support professional can vary significantly based on a wide range of factors but typically you will be providing assistance to users and developers of technology products such as apps, mobile phones, software products or other informatics, electronic or mechanical goods. Key IT Support tasks

IT Support is a fairly broad term and the work undertaken in this role can vary massively but the primary function is to help monitor and maintain computer systems and networks across an organisation. Working in IT Support, the tasks you are likely to be required to undertake may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Monitoring and configuring computer hardware systems
  • Diagnosing and fixing hardware/software faults
  • Logging, responding to and solving customer/employee queries
  • Analysing call logs to spot trends and underlying issues
  • Installing and configuring computer hardware, software, systems and networks
  • Supporting the roll out of new systems and applications
  • Training people on new systems, face-to-face and online
  • Investigating, diagnosing and solving computer software and hardware faults
  • Conducting electrical safety checks on computer equipment
  • Testing and evaluating new technology

Key IT Support skills

  • In-depth knowledge of computer systems, hardware and software
  • The ability to work well and communicate effectively with other people
  • The ability to think logically and practically
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Attention to detail
  • The ability to learn quickly and pick up new skills as technology evolves and advances

Qualifications and experience

There is no core qualification necessary to get into the world of IT Support. A good education and the ability to demonstrate the qualities listed above, paired with an understanding of and enthusiasm for technology is more than enough to get started in this type of role.
There are, however, a number of professional qualifications that can help to advance a career in IT Support. Look into one of the following courses to give yourself the competitive edge:
  • BTEC (Edexcel) National Certificate and Diploma IT Practitioners
  • City & Guilds (E-Quals) IT Practitioners Certificate and Advanced Diploma
  • OCR (iPRO) Certificate for IT Practitioners
