Product Manager Jobs: Find Your Next Role with Michael Page

Are you looking for product manager jobs? Michael Page can help. We work with top employers across the UK to connect talented candidates with the perfect job opportunities.

Whether you’re just starting your career in product management or are a seasoned professional, we can help you find the right product manager jobs to match your skills and interests.

The role of a product manager

Product manager jobs are a relatively modern creation, which means there is still some flexibility to the product manager job description. However, it is largely agreed that product management sits at the intersection of user experience (UX), tech, and business.

They must identify the customer need for a product or feature, and simultaneously identify whether it will fulfil overall business objectives. They will then set goals and KPIs for a product, and work with teams across the organisation to turn that vision into a reality.

Product managers must help their organisation to achieve business objectives by bridging communication gaps and achieving agreement amongst teams working in finance, design and development, as well as the customer themselves.

Product management professionals must understand their product on a deep level, and with engineering at the centre of product development, a thorough understanding of this technology is key.

Finally, user experience is a significant focus for every product manager: they must represent the business inside the organisation and understand the customer’s journey with the business, from before they are aware of the product, to long after purchasing.

Product managers will work with the company’s leaders, and senior product managers, to set objectives around their product that aligns with the business’ top level roadmap and strategy. Regular meetings with sales, marketing, legal, and leadership are necessary to identify whether there is customer appetite for new feature ideas, and whether they are feasible on a business level.

This role involves a huge amount of project management and people management, as well as understanding and representing user needs, market monitoring, aligning stakeholders and encouraging collaboration.

FAQs

What qualifications do I need to become a product manager?

Having a Bachelor’s degree in any subject can help you secure product manager roles, but a degree in project management or business will be advantageous. There are also many postgraduate qualifications in project management that could serve to make applicants more attractive to hiring managers, although these are not necessary to enter the product management space. Furthermore, there are a wide variety of professional qualifications available in both product management and project management that will bolster candidates’ understanding of the profession. While not every hiring manager will demand formal qualifications, they can certainly help.

What skills does a product manager need to have?

For product managers, technical skills and UX skills are a must. They also require data and analysis skills, research skills, and a thorough understanding of business. When it comes to softer skills, interpersonal skills, team management, organisational skills, problem-solving and the ability to prioritise are essential.

What does a product manager do?

Product managers connect teams across the business to bring product strategy to life. The role spans numerous activities, from strategic planning and customer research to bringing teams together around a shared understanding of customer needs, and overcoming obstacles to bring a product to life.

How to get a product manager job with no experience

Product manager is a complex role with a lot of responsibilities, so it can be difficult for candidates to secure a product management job without any experience at all. Yet it is not impossible. If you do not have any experience but would like to get into product management, focus on building up your project management skills, your long-term planning skills, and your technical understanding.
