The role of a Marketing Manager
The role of a marketing executive varies significantly depending on the size of their employer. At SMEs, people in marketing executive jobs tend to be in entry-level or graduate roles, while at larger organisations, a marketing executive is often a more senior position that features above a number of more junior marketing roles. Generally speaking, marketing-executives work to support the marketing function of their organisation through tasks including planning, event organisation, distribution, advertising, public relations, content production, social media, data, and research. This makes them marketing generalists who can turn their hand to any task requested of them.
Expected job role tasks
No matter the seniority level of the marketing executive role in question, people within these jobs generally must complete similar tasks. Overseeing and developing marketing campaigns, which involves conducting research and data analysis in order to define and segment brand audiences is often a large part of their day-to-day role. They will also play a big part in ideating campaigns, reporting the results, and devising the overall marketing strategy. People in marketing executive jobs can also be expected to take on the bulk of content creation, whether this means writing and sub-editing copy, or creating graphics or video.
They will also need to be able to maintain the company website and social media channels. Organising and promoting events is another frequent task that falls within the remit of a marketing executive. They may also play a part in coordinating internal marketing, and contributing to the company culture and branding of their organisation. People in marketing executive roles will typically use a customer relationship management (CRM) system on a daily basis. Finally, they may be tasked with compiling and distributing financial and statistical information from the marketing department.
Primary function
The primary function of a marketing executive is to support the marketing function in any way required of them. At smaller businesses this may mean they are the only employee within the marketing team. It gives people in marketing executive jobs a lot more responsibility, and means their decision making skills must be second to none. Within larger organisations, they may simply be required to do what is asked of them by the Marketing Manager or Marketing Director.
Key hard/soft skills
There are many hard skills involved required for the role of marketing executive, especially around content production and performance measurement. These include writing, graphic design, video shooting and editing, social media, data science, and web development skills. Candidates for such roles should also exhibit strong commercial awareness and numerical skills. General IT skills are non-negotiable in this role, while commercial awareness is also a must. In terms of the soft skills required for marketing-executives, creativity, teamwork, and communication skills are high on the list. Strong attention to detail, adaptability, and organisation and planning skills should come naturally to people who want to go into this field.
Qualifications required
Marketing executive jobs are open to all graduates, with some roles also open to school leavers too, depending on the company. However, a degree or professional qualification in subjects including, communications, marketing, advertising, PR, psychology, business, management, or data science will make candidates particularly appealing to prospective employers. If the marketing executive role is dedicated to a particular niche such as digital marketing, data-driven marketing, or influencer marketing, for example then the qualifications required will be more relevant to that specific discipline.
