Account Manager Jobs: Find Your Next Role with Michael Page

Whether you’re just starting your career or are a seasoned professional, we can help you find the right account manager jobs to match your skills and interests.

The role of an account manager

No matter the business or sector they work in, an account manager’s primary role is to serve as the primary touchpoint between the company they work for and its customers. An account manager job description will typically focus on building business relationships and client satisfaction rather than sales. Their main goal will be to retain that customer, but they may also be tasked with upselling their customers more products and/or services.

Account managers typically work with a few large accounts, or multiple smaller ones. Often they will operate as part of a larger team of account managers - and sometimes salespeople - and may be responsible for training or managing junior account managers. Account managers usually report directly to an account director, but in smaller companies may report to the CEO or managing director.

The account manager’s job begins once a salesperson has closed a deal. At this point they will be tasked with onboarding the customer, and then managing the account on an ongoing day-to-day basis. This includes effectively addressing any customer needs and concerns, pre-empting any challenges in the relationship, and developing a strong relationship with their contacts that can weather any future storms. A strong account manager will have a deep, technical knowledge of their company’s products and services, as well as any industry developments, so they are able to pass this expertise onto their customers.

Constant learning is mandatory in this role; it is essential account managers also develop a thorough understanding of their customers’ industries, roles, and challenges. It will often be necessary to advocate for the customer to internal teams in the company, and similarly to explain any internal challenges to clients. ~
