The role of a director

Director jobs come with a huge amount of responsibility. Directors are legally responsible for the running of a company, and while they can hire employees to help with this, ultimately the buck stops with them.

Directors handle day-to-day operations of a company, ensuring all statutory filing obligations are met, and that the business is in line with any legal regulations. They must participate in board meetings and, alongside other directors, make vital business decisions and ensure the company’s obligations are fulfilled.

There are a number of different types of directors, including managing directors, finance directors, sales directors and professionals in HR director jobs. These directors specialise in their own area, and represent their department at directors meetings, which are typically headed by the managing director or CEO.

For instance, professionals in finance director jobs are responsible for the business’ financial health and growth. In addition to day-to-day duties such as handling cash flow and overseeing accounting operations, they must report to the board of directors on the company’s finances and offer an expert financial perspective during collaborative decision making.

There is also a significant difference between executive director jobs and non executive director jobs. Executive directors have management responsibilities within the company - they may hold job titles such as Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, or Managing Director - while non-executive directors are appointed as chairmen to safeguard the company’s interest. Non executive directors do not have management responsibilities.

FAQs:

What qualifications do I need to become a director?

Directors do not need any formal qualifications; the criteria to meet will be at the discretion of the company. However, this role does typically require a high level of experience in a specific industry, and candidates may need a degree or other qualifications to enter this industry in the first place. In the UK a director must be 16 or over, and not be disqualified from being a director.

What skills does a director need to have?

Leadership skills are vital for all directors, as they are leading a company and will need to be able to influence their workforce to push in the same direction. Executive directors must also have superb management skills as they will be managing a department day to day. Strategic skills are of huge importance for an effective director team, and directors must also be resilient to cope with the stress and responsibility of this role.

What does a director do?

Directors are in charge of the management of a company’s business. They are legally responsible for ensuring the company is compliant with government regulations and make any necessary strategic and operational decisions to promote growth. Executive directors are also responsible for the management of their departments.

Can you get a director job with no experience?

It is possible to get a director job with no experience - it is rare this level of a job would offer work experience. However, in order to secure an executive director role, a professional will typically already be very senior in their organisation, and thus will have a high level of experience in their industry. To secure a non-executive director role, the candidate will also need to have worked at a senior level for a significant number of years. They may also have a high profile in the business world, and have worked as a director before.
